Reusable Hydration Membrane
Reusable, cleanable, built for painting
These reusable wet palette membranes are designed specifically for miniature painting. It delivers consistent paint quality session after session, while cutting down the waste that disposable hydration papers leave behind.
Why painters switch to the reusable membrane
Smooth application
A specially treated surface lets paint glide on evenly. Ideal for washes, inks, and metallic paints that struggle on fibrous hydration papers.
Controlled hydration
Controlled capillary action stabilises paint moisture. You keep the consistency you want, and the paint stays workable for longer.
Reusable and eco-friendly
Traditional hydration papers go in the bin after one session. The Redgrass membrane cleans up and comes back for more. Light staining over time is cosmetic only.
How to set up your wet palette
Nine steps that prepare your Redgrass Wet Palette with a reusable membrane. Follow them once and the routine becomes second nature.
Step 1
You will need one hydration foam pad. If it has been stored for a while, it may feel somewhat dry and a little smaller than expected.
Step 2
Immerse the foam in water. A dry foam pad can take a couple of minutes to absorb fully. Stop when it is completely wet.
Step 3
Squeeze out all the water. Steps 2 and 3 are only needed when the foam pad is completely dry and stiff.
Step 4
Place the foam in the wet palette case. Add water to moisten it. See the reference image below for the recommended amount.
Step 5
Wait until the foam is evenly moistened. Keep the water level below the top of the foam, or it will flood the membrane when you apply it.
Step 6
RGG membranes are one-sided, unlike hydration papers. The blank side faces up for paint. The printed side faces the foam.
Step 7
Apply the membrane. Line it up with the foam pad and make sure it is the correct way up, blank side facing you.
Step 8
Smooth out curls or bubbles with the side of your hand. For best results the surface stays in full contact with the moist foam beneath.
Step 9
Start painting. Top up the water every couple of hours for the longest possible working life.
How to clean and reuse your membrane
Clean the membrane before the paint fully cures and you can get at least three to six sessions out of each one. With a little care, many more.
Step 1
Use or remove any excess paint still on the membrane surface before you begin cleaning.
Step 2
Use an old soft brush, a damp paper towel, or your fingers to lift off dried paint. Avoid anything abrasive.
Step 3
Rinse in a sink or bowl of lukewarm water with gentle circular motions. Do not scratch at the paint.
Step 4
If the paint is not fully cured, it lifts off in water. Do not use strong cleaning chemicals or abrasive tools.
Step 5
Once the hydration membrane is visibly clean, move on to drying.
Step 6
Let the membrane dry completely on a flat surface.
Step 7
The membrane is ready to use again. Expect at least three to six cycles, and often many more, depending on the paints you work with.
Reusable membrane FAQ
How do I clean the reusable membrane?
Cleaning is simple. Paint that has not fully cured lifts off in water with a soft brush or your fingers. See the cleaning section above for the full routine. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
How many times can I reuse the membrane?
At least three to six cycles for most painters. With careful cleaning and a light touch, each membrane will go far beyond that. Your mileage depends on the paints you use and how quickly you clean after a session.
My membrane is stained. Is that normal?
Yes. Staining is cosmetic and does not affect performance. Highly pigmented paints tend to leave a little colour behind. The membrane still works exactly as intended.
Is the Redgrass reusable membrane recyclable?
When you are ready to dispose of a spent membrane, it goes out with paper and card recycling, in line with your local legislation.

Perfect
Excellent product, but users should be aware to follow basic cleanliness for the paper. If you’re not going to be painting for more than the briefest of time, clean the paper and let it dry to maintain its usefulness, as well as drying out the sponge, or black mold spots will grow.
I really wanted to like these, but sadly I am not organised enough to wash them quickly enough. Do not let the paint dry as it will stick and take the top layer off. If I was more organised they would be amazing! So the problem is definitely with me, not the product.
One of the best papers I’ve ever used. I can only recommend it to everyone.
Not sure what kind of paper these are made from but they are incredible. I’ve cleaned them off up to five times so far and still worked. Amazing!!!
